Maui Family Support Services, Inc. Receives Funding From Hawaiian Indigenous Education Program

Maui Family Support Services, Inc. received an award of $ 776,400 for its service to individuals and families in Maui County.

The funding will support the agency’s Ho’owaiwai Kaiāulu project, which provides a continuum of services that promote protective factors within the families of children and youth in Maui County.

“These include increasing children’s socio-emotional skills, increasing parental knowledge about parenting and child development; improve social bonds for families, strengthen parental resilience and provide and / or connect families with concrete supports, ”said Edel Baguio-Larena, CEO of MFSS.

The services will include:

  • Identify families in need of support and provide community links to resources;
  • Offer support groups for parents to reduce isolation, increase parenting skills, family literacy and child development;
  • Provide LifeSkills training to middle and high school youth to improve their skills in healthy decision making and reduce risky behaviors, including substance abuse, substance use and abuse;
  • Provide one-on-one parenting support, parenting education and linkage to community support through home visiting services with prenatal parents and families of children 0-5 years old; and
  • Increase children’s school readiness and healthy development through licensed child care services for infants and toddlers in Hāna.

This award will provide funding for the first of three possible years of funding from the Native Hawaiian Education Program.

MFSS is a private, non-profit agency incorporated in 1980 to provide early childhood development services to families on Maui. The agency has provided 40 years of continuous service to children and families in Maui County.

The mission of the MFSS is to promote healthy family functioning by providing support services that build on the strengths of the family. The agency serves the islands of Maui, Lānaʻi and Molokaʻi, with a main directive to use collective resources towards the prevention of child abuse and neglect.
